Pendley Gold Cup* – His Story
In the winter of 1999 and after much searching, Pendley Gold Cup was found in the U.K. by Greg Gerry and Darren Telford and imported to Australia by Lloyd Scott of LJS Riding Ponies. June 2001 saw the closure of LJS Riding Ponies and Pendley Gold Cup was purchased by us – Terry and Leonie Walsh of Brookville Stud situated at Beaudesert in Queensland.
We stand Gold Cup at stud with Greg and Darren at their Whitmere Stud in northern New South Wales. Gold Cup without doubt descends from one of the most successful ridden families that the U.K. has been privileged to have. His sire, Camargue Tribute was Champion Stallion at the National Pony Show (UK) and is the sire of countless Show Pony, Show Hunter and Hack Champions throughout the United Kingdom. Tribute’s dam was Holly of Spring, four times winner of the coveted Wembley Pony of the Year title. She was in turn sired by Gems Signet, who when gelded won the Wembley Pony of the Year title. Tribute’s sire, Keston Tribune, was a Supreme Champion at Ponies of Britain and the sire of Pony of the Year winners including: Syon Sensation, Hollys Gem, Chiddock Gossip Column and Ambershire Master Touch. Keston Tribune was by another famous sire in Rosslyn Sandalwood, who sired numerous top class ponies, including: Solway Redwood (UK), Reserve Pony of the Year, and Solway Magnolia (Imp), dam of multi Royal and Grand National winner Spring Holly of Astral and grand dam of Royal Command of Beckworth, sire of two EFA National ponies of the Year in Australia, namely Chippenham Warrant and Royal Minnette of Beckworth.
Gold Cup’s dam line is equally special, as his dam Pendley Loving Cup was overall Champion Riding Pony Broodmare at the National Pony Show (UK) and Supreme In Hand exhibit at East of England. Loving Cup’s full sister Pendley Birthday Girl (dec) is possibly one of Englands most successful brood mares of all time, being dam of twice Wembley Reserve Champion Show of the Year and B.S.P.S. Supreme Champion, Colbeach Sensation, and the flamboyant moving Colbeach Martina, Champion at the Royal of England and Reserve Champion Royal International Horse Show.
Loving Cup’s dam Pendley Maypole graced the show ring with style, winning British In Hand Champion, Supreme at Essex County, East of England and third at Wembley Horse of the Year Show. Maypole was sired by Ponies of Britain Supreme Champion, Pendley Model, who was in turn by Solway Master Bronze. Maypole’s dam Bwlch Mazurka was a tremendous broodmare, producing no less than 25 foals. Mazurka enjoyed a very successful show career with Supremes at National Pony Show, The Royal of England and East of England. Loving Cup (dam of Pendley Gold Cup) has been a very consistent breeder for the Pendley Stud (UK) producing many top ponies:
- *Pendley Gold Link (full brother to Gold Cup), Supreme at Devon and Kent County shows as a yearling
- *Pendley Temptation, Supreme Yearling at Ponies UK Summer Show
- *Pendley Elite, top 12.2 Show Pony produced by Ron Thomas
- *Pendley Design, exported to America
- *Pendley Rum Punch, Champion Foal National Pony Show (UK)
From his first few seasons at stud, Gold Cup’s stock are meeting all and every expectation, having tremendous turns of front, breathtaking movement and wonderful temperaments, which is so important in the breeding of children’s ponies. His eldest foals are embarking on their ridden careers. From limited opportunities Gold Cup has already sired winners at State and Royal level in Australia, New Zealand and in the United Kingdom.
Before being imported to Australia, Gold Cup was shown extensively and with considerable success by Jayne Stewart of the Starlyte Stud in the UK. His success has escalated since his arrival in Australia, where he has collected Champions and Supremes at all major shows. His show ring successes include:
